April 11th – A Loss Of Ardour

Just a couple of days ago the temperature was below freezing but the sun came out and a Chorus Frog began to sing vociferously, lusty even. But this morning, even though the temperature was well above freezing….well, 6 degrees….no frog sang! Has this spate of bad weather knocked the ardour out of them!? Somehow I doubt it. But not hearing them had an ominous quality to it – sort of a Silent Spring feeling.

Although the temperature was 6 degrees and rising, there was a good wind out of the SW and rain – sometimes hard, sometimes just drizzle, but always there. The snow that had fallen last night was pretty well melted and the ground was saturated (make sure you bring your rubber boots if you plan on visiting in the next few days!). Due to the conditions we just ran the ground traps for a few hours. We got 21 birds but only 1 new one. Fifteen of the 20 retraps were American Tree Sparrows. They’re marking time until the weather changes and they can head north.
