September 3rd – Even Slower!

Yellow-rumped Warblers are still feeding young – the reason we won’t see them until later in the month. These were seen near Algonquin Park. -K. Vandenberg

My hunch was that today the numbers would pick up….but, no, it was another slow day – despite the rain during the night, overcast skies, and light NW winds. Are the gods conspiring against us? Karen Vandenberg, near Algonquin Park, sent me an interesting picture: Yellow-rumped Warblers are still feeding young. Bruce Murphy at Hilliardton Marsh near Liskeard felt that the breeding season was at least a week late. So maybe this is what we’re experiencing. So any time now……

Ruby-throated Hummingbird – just banded by Faye. -MMG

The real story today was the battle of Old vs New Baggers. The Oldies, with just 7 nets, banded 8 birds to the Younguns 11 birds with 21 nets. There was some smugness going on for sure.

Evidently it takes 3 Y’Baggers to extract a bird: 1 to manipulate the bird, 2 to give advice. -FAS
